Antiqued phrenology head ceramic ornament
A small antiqued glazed grey distressed ceramic phrenology head.
Based upon the studies of L N Fowler, this purely decorative head represents the beliefs of practitioners of phrenology that different areas of the brain affected the shape of the skull and these shapes could be used to study personality.
This striking glazed head is an eye-catching item, perfect on a shelf in the living room or study.
Lorenzo Niles Fowler was a real character from New York, who from the 1840s began reading heads and started a publishing industry that churned out vast quantities of phrenological periodicals, pamphlets and books.
For thirty years I have studied crania and living heads from all parts of the World and have found in every instance that there is a perfect correspondence between the conformation of the healthy skull of an individual and his known characteristics.
To make my observations available I have prepared a bust of superior form and marked the divisions of the organs in accordance with my researches and experience.

This item is a slightly distressed ceramic. During the manufacturing process, slight imperfections have been deliberately created to give the item an older more 'antique' look than it would have if it had been made to be perfect. There will be parts of a design missing and some of the writing may be illegible. There may also be slight bumps or other surface imperfections or irregularities in the glaze. These are meant to give the care-worn and well used look of a much older item to a recently manufactured product.
This distressed finish is not to be regarded as a fault.
